Antimicrobial resistance threatens not only human health but sustainable development, too. Many people are still pushed into poverty every year because they cannot afford to pay medical bills. Resistant infections last longer, are costlier to treat and make treatment even harder to afford. However, a lot can be done to reduce the occurrence of resistant infections, from reducing antibiotic use to ensuring adequate access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, which prevent infections from happening in the first place. I research cost effective ways to combat resistance and ways of limiting this threat whilst also ensuring access to effective antibiotics is maintained for those who need them. Because all of us need to be resistance fighters.
