Combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
The AMR issue is very relevant to the work that we’re doing at FAO, particularly in Africa. As the livestock and agriculture sectors develop, we recognize for sustainable growth that the development of improved farming practices is needed. This includes the importance of addressing safe and effective antibiotic use in aquaculture, fisheries, crop production and forestry and forest products. The implications of antibiotic runoff are highly relevant in Africa, where our waterways are used for bathing, clothes washing and drinking water. And this, to a large extent, is the way that FAO in Africa is supporting and contributing to the one health approach to address antimicrobial resistance. Because all of us need to be resistance fighters.
