Resistance Fighter's Story

Combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

We were acquainted with antimicrobial resistance by my mother's brain hemorrhage and post-operative hospital infection. Although a very successful aneurysm surgery brought her to life, post-op meningitis developed as a result of infection. She received sepsis treatment in two different hospitals for 4.5 months. She could not take the main treatments she needed because of infection complications. She lost all of her functions, including her speech.

Still, she was resistant more than the bacteria! But we have suffered heavy losses in this fight. We have been a mother to my mother since 12 years because she is bedridden. Thousands of patients are losing this fight from the beginning. Sepsis’s real perpetrators are not bacteria, we are! Unconscious behaviors of our patients' relatives, incomplete or incorrect attitudes of healthcare professionals or inadequacies in hospitals are the biggest obstacles in preventing hospital infections. I support all kinds of efforts to raise awareness at all levels in our community.
